Kids for College Summer Camp 2023!

College for Kids is a summer day camp at Hagerstown Community College where education and fun mix. Their camps offer kids and teens an opportunity to discover the magic of science, creative writing, engineering, computer programming, music theater, and more. The benefits of attending College for Kids are fantastic. Students can explore new subject areas, improve problem-solving skills, build confidence, and make new friends. The week-long camps are taught by qualified instructors from local schools and businesses and are open to elementary and middle school students entering grades 2 through 8. All camps are held at Hagerstown Community College’s campus in June, July, and August.

College for Kids has been providing quality educational opportunities for children and teens in Washington County and the surrounding area for over 30 years.

Grade 4-5: Week 1 (June 20 - 23) 

Crafty Kids

Scrapbooking, stamping, card making, oh my! Make the world a more beautiful place, one craft at a time. Create fun and unique scrapbook pages to display your water, school, and birthday pictures, decorate birthday and Christmas cards, and even design your own logos. From board games to tote bags, you're sure to have a craft-tastic time!

With games, crafts, and more, learning about bugs will be anything but boring. You'll spend several hours outdoors every day, observing insects, catching them with entomology nets, and having fun. In this week-long course, you'll learn the basics of crime scene investigation, or CSI tactics, and solve a fictional crime. You'll learn how to extract DNA, complete a DNA Gel Electrophoresis, use dissections to solve crimes, and identify other biological materials to lead you to the culprit.

Creating a Fictional World: Intro to Writing Fantasy

Do you love to read and write stories? Are your favorite stories the ones that take place in "worlds" of their own? If you love science fiction and fantasy like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Eragon, this class is for you! Go behind the scenes of some of literature's most famous fantasy/sci-fi settings, and then create one of your own. Develop a "world" journal to help you establish the rules of your own special fictional place. Design your world's geography, history, weather, plants, animals, and even people. Then just add stories! In this class, we'll do some writing, plus lots of hands-on activities like building a 3-D map, creating a diorama, and sculpting a creature or person from your world.
